Garden After Dark – Kids Event

Join us for a special evening at the QPS Community Garden!

As the sun sets, the garden starts to change. Children will explore the plants, insects and animals that become active in the evening through hands-on activities, nature investigations, creative challenges and garden games.

They’ll discover what happens in the garden after dark, how living things adapt to the evening, and how they use their senses to find their way around and stay safe.

Please choose comfortable, culturally appropriate clothing and closed shoes suitable for outdoor activities. Kindly avoid frightening costumes, full-face masks, weapons or accessories that may be unsafe during the activities.

Come ready to explore, investigate and discover the garden after dark!

Activity Rotation

Kids will take part in a series of hands-on gardening and Halloween-themed activities.

• Station 1: Clay Halloween Decorations — 20 minutes
  Create Halloween-themed decorations using clay.
• Station 2: Seedling Pot Painting & Pumpkin Seed Sowing — 10 minutes
  Paint a small pot and sow pumpkin seeds to take home.
• Station 3: Repotting Butternut Squash Plants — 10 minutes
  Learn how to repot a butternut squash plant and care for it as it grows.

Kids will rotate between Stations 2 and 3 after 10 minutes.

Additional Activity

• Pumpkin Painting — 10 minutes
  Paint and decorate pumpkins with creative Halloween designs.

Garden Hunt

40–45 minutes

Kids will explore the garden on a fun hunt for hidden candies and small gardening tools.

Take-Home Goodie Bag

Each child will receive a bag containing:

• Paint
• A pot with a butternut squash plant
• A pot with pumpkin seeds
• Candies
