The History of Agriculture in Qatar

A Talk with Dr. Guillaume-Augustin de Vaulx
Agriculture in Qatar is often viewed through the lens of modern innovation and food security. Yet its deeper history, its ecological roots, social functions, and cultural significance, remains largely unexplored.
Join Dr. Guillaume-Augustin de Vaulx, philosopher and biologist specializing in agroecology, for an in-depth talk examining the historical development of agriculture and its relevance to Qatar today. Drawing from both scientific and philosophical perspectives, Dr. De Vaulx will explore how agriculture has evolved globally, how it was introduced and adapted within the Gulf region, and why understanding this history matters for shaping Qatar’s future relationship with land, food, and sustainability.
What to Expect
The talk will explore:
- The origins and evolution of agriculture globally
- The social and ecological functions of agricultural systems
- The introduction and development of agriculture in Qatar
- The challenges and adaptations unique to arid environments
- Implications for contemporary sustainability efforts
A moderated Q&A session will follow the lecture.
