An introductory workshop connecting children to the spirit of Hiya Biya through planting and traditional practices.
This hands-on session invites participants to explore the basics of growing food while discovering local traditions through palm weaving. Children will get their hands in the soil, learn how plants grow, and take part in meaningful cultural activities in a fun and engaging environment.
What is Hiya Biya?
Hiya Biya is a traditional Gulf practice where children plant seeds in small woven baskets often made from palm leaves and release them into the sea while singing. Rooted in local culture and often associated with Eid Al Adha, the tradition connects children to nature, giving, and community in a simple but meaningful way.
Workshop Activities:
- Welcome & Introduction (10 mins)
- Introduction to Hadiqaa and Hiya Biya
- Brief discussion: Why growing matters in Qatar?
- Planting Activity (35 mins)
- Discussion on soil quality and what plants need to grow
- Adding compost and preparing the soil
- Planting Hiya Biya seedlings with hands-on guidance
- Seed Bomb Activity (25 mins)
- Hands-on creation of seed bombs using soil, compost, and seeds
- Discussion on how and where seed bombs can be used to support growth in nature
- Leaf Stamping Activity (20 mins)
- Exploring different types of leaves and textures
- Creating prints using natural leaves on paper
- Using colours to bring patterns and nature-inspired designs to life
