Hiya Biya – Kids Workshop
with Hadiqaa × National Museum of Qatar

An introductory workshop connecting children to Hiya Biya through planting and traditional practices.
This hands-on session invites participants to explore the basics of growing food while discovering local traditions through palm weaving. Children will get their hands in the soil, learn how plants grow, and take part in meaningful cultural activities in a fun and engaging environment.
What is Hiya Biya?
Hiya Biya is a traditional Gulf practice where children plant seeds in small woven baskets often made from palm leaves and release them into the sea while singing. Rooted in local culture and often associated with Eid Al Adha, the tradition connects children to nature, giving, and community in a simple but meaningful way.
Workshop Activities:
- Welcome & Introduction (10 mins)
- Introduction to Hadiqaa and Hiya Biya
- Brief discussion: Why growing matters in Qatar?
- Planting Activity (35 mins)
- Soil mixing and bed preparation
- Planting seasonal crops (e.g. corn, aromatic herbs)
- Basic guidance on spacing, watering, and care
- Cultural Activity – Palm Weaving (30 mins)
- Introduction to traditional use of palm leaves
- Hands-on creation of a simple woven item*
- Reflection & Creative Activity (15 mins)
- Nature-inspired coloring or drawing
- Recap of key learnings
